Navigating healthcare after a new diagnosis.
A new diagnosis can feel like being handed a stack of paperwork and a long to-do list at the worst possible moment. This guide is a practical first step. It will not replace your providers, and it is not medical advice. It is a way to organize what is in front of you so you can move forward with more support.
Do not include private health information in this form. A hivehealth team member will follow up to understand the best next step.
Seven first moves that make the next month easier.
1. Capture what you were told.
Within 24 hours, write down the diagnosis in plain language, the provider who shared it, the date, and any next steps or referrals mentioned. Memory fades fast under stress.
2. Organize your paperwork in one place.
Create one folder, digital or physical, for after-visit summaries, lab results, imaging reports, referrals, prescriptions, and insurance letters. Add a running list of medications and dosages.
3. Build a question list before the specialist visit.
Write down what you do not understand, what you are most worried about, what would change your daily life, and what you want to know about treatment options, timelines, and second opinions.
4. Understand what your benefits actually cover.
Pull your insurance card and benefits summary. Look up specialist copays, imaging coverage, in-network hospitals, prior authorization rules, and any deductible already met this year.
5. Prepare for the cost conversation.
Ask each provider for cost estimates and what is in-network. Save every EOB and bill. If something feels wrong, you do not have to figure it out alone.
6. Decide who is on your support team.
A diagnosis usually affects more than one person. Decide who you want involved in appointments, paperwork, and decisions, and how they will get updates.
7. Protect your time and energy.
Block calendar time for phone calls, paperwork, and rest. Healthcare logistics is real work. Treat it that way.
You do not have to navigate this alone.
